I’d be willing to bet that at least once in the last 12 months, you’ve looked at your electric bill and either nearly fainted or got sick to your stomach because it was so high. Have you checked your windows? One of the biggest drains on an electric bill is old, leaky windows. In the summer, you lose cool air from the a/c and in the winter you lose precious heat (precious because I hate being cold). Your a/c unit or furnace has to work overtime to cool or warm and when they work overtime? You pay a lot more. Not only in the cost of your electric and gas bills, but also in maintence on the furnace or a/c. If it’s working twice as hard, it’s going to break sooner.
The solution? Obviously replace your windows. One good option is solar windows. These work by using the sun’s power to both heat and cool your home and because they’re new windows, they’ll seal right and have no leaks. I honestly have no idea what they run in cost, but companies like Solar America offer free consultations. Solar windows also have another added benefit. Government grants. Most state and the federal government both offer grants and tax credits for installing energy efficient windows in your home. Yes! Your windows can actually make you money!
If you know for certain you could never afford new windows (and you may be surprised at who can afford them), you can still do a bit of fixing on them. Plastic sheeting and tape or small nails work just as well. You won’t be able to see out of them though and that’s a big downfall for me personally. Whatever it takes to save money though and if you electric or gas bills are running you out of your home? It’s certainly better than nothing.
